The Chase Sapphire Reserve has become the poster child for viral marketing gone right: it was endorsed by celebrities, attracted the oft-courted Millennial crowd, and came with a great sign-up bonus of 100,000 Ultimate Rewards points. Even with the $450 annual fee, people flocked to the card, blowing Chase’s expectations out of the water, and establishing the card as a fierce competitor to the American Express Platinum and the Citi Prestige.

Well, you know what they say about all good things. Today, we learned via Mommy Points that Chase would be ending the 100,000 Ultimate Reward sign-up bonus associated with the Chase Sapphire Reserve. And unlike the recent Southwest Airlines Companion Pass surprise, Chase has given consumer another week to apply, as the bonus will continue to exist online until January 12th, and then in-branch for a few weeks after that. After the 12th, the bonus will be the same as the Chase Sapphire Preferred: 50,000 Ultimate Reward points.

Dan has previously outlined the great benefits of this card here, but to quickly recap some of the more interesting points:

  • 3 points per dollar on dining and restaurants, 1 point per dollar on everything else
  • $300 yearly travel credit
  • 100,000 Ultimate Rewards point sign-up bonus, worth $1,500 in travel when used through the Ultimate Rewards portal

Note that this card is bound by Chase’s 5/24 rule, which means if you’ve open 5 lines of credit within the past 24 months, don’t count on getting approved for this (or any other!) Chase card.

Some people have reported bypassing this rule through Chase Private Client Services or through pre-qualification in-branch, but I wouldn’t hold your breath. Sadly, I’m way over 5/24, so I’m out of luck.
