Readers of the blog might remember a few weeks ago, when reader Jordan asked for help in picking his dream trip to China. We ran a giveaway, with an Amazon gift card randomly given away to anyone who gave suggestions, with the promise of a second gift card given to the commenter that Jordan thought was the best suggestion
There were 11 actual trip suggestions, and Jordan reviewed them and picked out the best one, which went to commenter Jason, who said
– Use United for roundtrip IAD to PEK in first or in business on ANA, since it’s roundtrip you get 1 free stopover and 2 free layovers, can stopover in Hawaii outbound or inbound. Inbound can be Shanghai – IAD since it allows you to have a layover.
-Within China, can use Avios to travel between cities, such like Shanghai to Beijing.
– Another idea is using AA miles for Cathay Pacific business or first class (best premium seat) between IAD – HKG and from HKG use Avios to China. Return trip can use United miles on ANA business or first

How do you use Avios between PEK and Shanghai without having to stopover in HKG? I would just buy the one way flight on ctrip.
Yep there is no avios redemption between PEK and Shanghai, unless you stop in HKG or Japan. Besides buying an one-way ticket on ctrip, an alternative is to take the high speed train, might be faster than plane as PEK and Shanghai airports are often under “air traffic control”
