Being a New Yorker, jetBlue is one of my go-to airlines. They run a great operation out of JFK, and they go to most of the places I need to be. I also took them up on their Virgin America point match promotion earlier this year, so I’ve amassed a stash of points over the years. Periodically, I’ll get e-mails to buy jetBlue points, and I haven’t ever taken advantage of it, but an e-mail I got today made me seriously stop and consider it.

e-mail
Through tomorrow (Thursday 12/22) you can buy JetBlue points with up to 70% bonusInvalid request error occurred.

If I buy 30,000 points (the most you can buy in a calendar year), I’d get an additional 21,000 points, all for ~$887 (taxes included). This is where math is your friend. 51,000 points for $887 is 1.7 cents a points, and most people value jetBlue points at 1-1.4 cents, so this is not a price at which I would speculatively buy jetBlue points.

My recommendation would be to avoid this opportunity if you also received this e-mail, unless you need to top up your balance in order to make a redemption. I’m thinking of heading to San Francisco in May for vacation–do I spend 20,000 points for economy or 82,000 points for their premium Mint service? My wallet says cheap and my heart says luxury!
