citiI’ve written before about Citi ThankYou points (along with Barclay Arrival, CapitalOne Venture and other cash-equivalent points).  My rule of thumb for credit card spending is

  1. Spending to get signup bonuses (this spending can come out to 50x or more!)
  2. Category bonuses (like 3x on groceries or 5x at office supply stores)
  3. Cash-back equivalent points (like the Barclay Arrival points)

It was a few years ago that the Citi ThankYou® Premier Card had some pretty high signup bonuses (like 100,000), so I know that there are a ton of people with some pretty big balances.  Up until recently the only way to redeem those was at a fixed value (1 cent per point for the Preferred, and 1.33 cent per point if you had the Premier)

Current CC offers

The only 2 offers that I know of are for:

  • Citi ThankYou® Preferred – 20,000 points after $1500 spend in the first 3 months with no annual fee
  • Citi ThankYou® Premier Card – 20,000 points after $2000 spend in the first 3 months plus another 30,000 points after $3,000 spend in 3 months in year 2 (but there is a $125 annual fee which is waived the first year but not the 2nd)

Neither of those offers excite me at all but hopefully there will be a good offer sometime soon

Airline transfer partners

Citi ThankYou points now transfer to the following airlines:

  • Cathay Pacific Asia Miles
  • EVA Air
  • Etihad
  • Air France / KLM Flying Blue
  • Garuda Indonesia
  • Malaysia Airlines
  • Qatar Airways
  • Singapore Airlines
  • Thai Airways

All of those transfers can be done in 1,000 mile increments at a 1:1 basis.  You can also transfer 1,000 ThankYou points to 1,500 Hilton HHonors points.

Drew from Travel is Free has the rundown on which of these airlines might work out the best for you, depending on what type of itinerary that you’re looking for.  There are a couple of good redemptions out there.  It’s worth mentioning that most of these airlines are distance-based (like ANA or British Airways)

Do you have any Citi ThankYou points?  Have you transferred any points through their new airline transfer partners?
