If you have a cash back credit card with 5% rotating categories, one of things you look forward to every three months is seeing what those sweet, sweet 5% cash back categories will be. Today, let’s take a look at the Discover it categories for the first quarter of 2017 and where you’ll be earning the extra cashback.
For the upcoming quarter, you’ll get 5% bonus Discover It cashback at gas stations, local commuter transportation, and wholesale clubs. If this sounds familiar, it should: Chase is offering 5% cashback at gas stations and local commuter transportation at the same time. I really dislike it when the Discover It categories overlap with the Chase Freedom categories, it’s like they’re TRYING to prevent us from getting the most out of our cards or something :-).

Wholesale Clubs are a unique offering this quarter, but my apartment is just a little too small for Costco-sized rolls of paper towels, so between Chase and Discover, I’m really out of luck in Q1 2017 for any Discover It categories cashback. If you can find a gas station or wholesale club that will let you buy gift cards with a credit card, I’d say go for it! This could be a great opportunity to try out gift card reselling, but I recommend you read Dan’s post on this before jumping in headfirst.

Something to note if you are thinking about getting the Discover It card is the double cashback in your first year of card membership. Per the Discover it website, “Discover automatically matches all the cash back you earn dollar for dollar at the end of your first year. Only for new cardmembers.” Basically, if you spend $1,500 at gas stations, local commuter transportation, or wholesale clubs during the first quarter Discover cash back categories, you’ll get $150 back, rather than $75. You’ll get the $75 back during the first quarter, and the second $75 will be applied at the end of your first year as a cardmember. Not too shabby!
