One of the nice benefits of several American Express cards is the free American Express Boingo Internet. It is currently available on the following cards:
- American Express SPG personal
- American Express SPG business card
- American Express Platinum card
To activate your free American Express Boingo Internet plan, just go to https://amex.boingo.com/
Then you’ll put in your Amex card number, and assuming that you have one of the authorized types of cards, it will authorize your American Express Boingo Internet plan. Personally, I signed up for the American Express SPG business card as part of my August 2015 credit card churn. The bonus for both types of SPG cards is (temporarily) up to 30,000 points which is (one of the reasons) why I signed up now.
Once you’ve been authorized, you have to set up a Boingo username and password.
How to use the American Express Boingo Internet plan
Then, you can download the Boingo app for your phone (or laptop computer). Once you log in to the app, it will scan for hot spots. Here’s an example of all the Boingo hot spots in Cincinnati
Are authorized users eligible for the American Express Boingo plan?
Yes – both primary cardholders and authorized users are eligible for the American Express Boingo plan. Each card can register up to 4 devices at a time for free
- Access to 1 million hotspots worldwide
- Unlimited Wi-Fi access at global hotspots
- Access on up to four devices
- No Wi-Fi roaming fees
One thing to note is that if you already have a Boingo plan, that paid plan will NOT be automatically canceled if you sign up for the free American Express Boingo Internet plan – you’ll have to make sure and cancel that separately.
I’ve been playing with the American Express Boingo plan now that I have it, and can definitely see some uses for it especially when we head to Europe later this week. I actually don’t have a separate data plan (we just go off of wi-fi), so I think it could be a huge benefit, though I haven’t yet found anywhere where I needed Internet that didn’t have wifi but DID have a Boingo hotspot. Any good tips for me?

I have an AMEX SPG Personal card, which I have had for many years and use regularly, but the AMEX Boingo link tells me I ma not eligible. Any one else had a similar result?
