The other day I had reason to order some special LAN Airlines meals and I thought I’d document the process of how to order LAN Airlines vegetarian meals and other kinds of meals.

Background – my flight to Peru

A few days ago, I detailed how I booked 2 business class lie flat seats to Peru.  Total price was 60,000 American AAdvantage miles, 90,000 Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan miles and about $120 in taxes and fees (after I clawed back $30 from Alaska)

I’ll have 4 flights on LAN Airlines, from Washington (IAD) to Lima (LIM), and from Lima to Cuzco (CUZ), and then back.  The Lima to Cuzco flights are only a little over an hour so don’t have any LAN Airlines meals.  For the longer flights from Washington to Lima (and back), I wanted to make sure to order a vegetarian meal for my wife.

How to order special (vegetarian, gluten-free, etc) LAN Airlines meals

Many airline websites allow you to pick out any special kind of meals on the website itself, but you can not order any special LAN Airlines meals on their website.  Instead, you need to call LAN at (866) 435-9526 to request your LAN Airlines vegetarian meal or any other special meal requests on LAN.

Once you call LAN, you will be asked for your LAN record locator.  If you’ve booked the flight with miles through another airline (like I did), you’ll need to make sure to get the LAN record locator.  For example, my ticket booked with American AAdvantage miles has an AA record locator (which shows up on aa.com) as well as a LAN record locator (which is the one you’ll need when talking to LAN).

Here are the special LAN Airlines meals that you can order

  • Children’s menu
  • Soft meal
  • Meals for diabetics
  • Gluten-free meal
  • Kosher meals
  • Low calorie meal
  • Low cholesterol meal
  • Low sodium meal
  • Low lactose meal
  • Vegan/vegetarian meal (without dairy products or eggs)
  • Vegetarian meal (may include dairy products and/or eggs)

When I called to request my LAN Airlines vegetarian meal, they asked if I wanted a “normal” vegetarian meal or an “ovo-lacto” vegetarian meal.  Carolyn opted for the “normal” one, so we’ll see how that goes 🙂

Note that you do have to call and request your special LAN Airlines meal at least 24 hours before the flight in order to
