Last week, I wrote about the introduction of a new sweepstakes from Starwood, called SPG Open the World.  You can play 2 times a day (per account), and have the chance to win up to 25,000 Starpoints instantly, with a grand prize at the end of 250,000 Starpoints.

How to play SPG Open the World

It’s easy and takes no skill.  Go to the SPG Open the world contest page.  After entering your SPG number and email address, you’ll get a prompt to pick a device to use to open your door (many SPG hotels don’t have keys and you use your mobile phone to open your door)

Then you get a random Starwood hotel and then you see if you “won”.

My experiences

I have been dutifully playing for both my wife and I twice a day, and every time I get the “Sorry you did not win” message.

Even though I know there has got to be no real difference in your odds depending on what phone you pick, or which door you choose, my analytical side has really wondered about it… But today, after landing on the “Castle” hotel (in China), I (finally) actually won!

I mean it’s only 1000 Starpoints but hey, better than nothing!

The terms and conditions say there are 561 Starpoint awards available:

  • 25,000 Starpoints: ARV $625.00; (1)
  • 10,000 Starpoints: ARV $250.00; (10)
  • 5000 Starpoints: ARV $125.00; (50)
  • 1000 Starpoints: ARV $35.00. (500)

It doesn’t say in what quantities each one is, but I put my guesses in parentheses).  There are also Amazon gift cards available as prizes

The SPG Open the World sweepstakes runs through September 30th.  Have you won anything?
