Yesterday we announced the live-beta test for the Mile Matrix – a new app that lets you figure out the miles it takes to go from any country to any other country, on any airline.  While it is still in beta-test, there are a few bugs or data inconsistencies, and we are also hoping to add additional features as time permits.

With that being said, there are a few questions / comments that often come up, and I have attempted to answer a few of them here.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How can I filter by origin or destination country? In the top right of the page, there is an input box that says “Search”.  You can type in (any part of) either the origin or destination country there.  For example, to search for flights between Germany and Australia, you could type in “Germ Aus”.  Note that it is a partial search so that will also show mileage costs between Germany and Austria.
  2. How come some airlines don’t show up? Because we’re still in beta-test, we have a limited data-set.  We will be adding additional airlines with later releases.  Note that distance-based award charts such as that of British Airways will not be added – this is solely for region-based award charts.
  3. Why are some countries listed together as a single origin / destination? This is done in an attempt to limit the total number of rows returned (to improve performance).  Some neighboring countries are grouped together as a single origin / destination since there is no difference in the number of miles required to go to, say, Namibia, Angola and Botswana
  4. What about off-peak mileage rates or other rates that depend on when the flight is? As currently implemented, the lowest possible price is shown.  For example, AAs off-peak award to the Caribbean, Europe or Asia are all shown at the lower, off-peak amount.  It is in the feature backlog to provide a way to distinguish these anomalies
  5. Why do some miles show up as “n/a”? Sometimes there is not information for a given country pair on a particular airline.  This could be because an airline does not include a country in their published region chart, or due to a lack of class of service (no First Class on some routes).  When we have nothing to show, we show “n/a”.

If there are other questions that you’d like answered, leave a note in the comments and I can answer.
