Via CNN and a tweet by Flyertalk, there’s an app called “Am I going down?” that checks the odds of the flight you’re on crashing.  You put in your departure airport, destination airport, airline and aircraft, and it will calculate the odds of your flight crashing, based on data from the Bureau of Aircraft Accidents Archives, the United States National Transportation Safety Board and the International Civil Aviation Organization.

The example from the article is a Boeing 777 Cathay Pacific flight from Hong Kong to Los Angeles which it gives odds of 4,068,434 to 1 on crashing (i.e. not a lot!)

Personally I wouldn’t pay 99 cents for the app, but I do find it interesting.  I know that by the odds, flying is safer than driving, but for me at least, there’s a bit of giving up control to someone else that makes me feel a tiny bit nervous.  Guess I need to fly more!! 😀
