Over the past few days, I’ve written about two different increased signup bonus offers on 2 new Chase cards.  The Chase Sapphire Preferred card has a pretty standard bonus – 50,000 points after spending $4,000 in the first 3 months, and an additional 5000 points after adding an authorized user and having them make at least one purchase in the first 3 months.

A new Chase Freedom offer

There’s also an increased signup offer for the Chase Freedom card – it’s normally 10,000 points, but is currently up to 15,000 Ultimate Rewards points after spending $500 in the first 3 months, and an additional 2500 Ultimate Rewards after adding an authorized user.

There is ALSO an increased cash back percentage on the Chase Freedom card this quarter.  Normally, you get 5x Ultimate Rewards in certain rotating categories each quarter (limited to $1500 in spending) – this quarter’s is Amazon, Zappos, Audible.com and Diapers.com, but Chase has a new promotion where starting on November 23rd you get 10X on those purchases.

Even better, you can spend your $1500 to get 5x BEFORE November 23rd, and then 10x on ANOTHER $1500 in purchases AFTER November 23rd.

Crafting a post headline

I wrote the headline Increased Chase Freedom offer – up to 40,000 points after spending $3000 in an attempt to succinctly combine these 2 promotions (the increased signup bonus AND the new 10x offer) into one.

After all, if you spend $3000 on your new Chase Freedom card – half before November 23rd and half after, you WILL earn 40,000 Ultimate Rewards points (15K from the signup bonus, 2.5K from the authorized user, 7.5K from the 5% deal and 15K from the 10% deal)

Writing a post headline is a bit of a tricky business.  There’s a bit of a balance between writing something exciting that grabs a potential reader’s attention without coming up with something misleading and/or click-baity.  While it was not my intention to be deceptive, clearly that’s how many of you took it.  One commenter said

Very misleading title! How about this one instead: Chase Freedom “up to” 1,000,000 points offer!*

*All you need to do is spend $1,000,000!

(giving us today’s post title)

Here were a few other comments:

  • How misleading!!! You just want people apply through your referral link but why would you use a title like this?
  • You know as well as I do that this is just a misleading title. The sign-up bonus hasn’t gone up.
  • Not one of your best titles, Dan.

Clearly many folks did not like yesterday’s headline, felt it was misleading, and for that I apologize.  Onward and upward to sharing the next deals together!
