When one door opens, two close. That’s the mantra at Southwest today, as they plan to add service to one of the largest holes in their network, while simultaneously closing two airports.

As of June 2nd, Southwest will cease service to Akron-Canton Airport, as well as Dayton International Airport. In a statement provided to WKYC by Akron-Canton Airport:

Despite strong community support of the airline and service, Southwest has made a business decision to no longer service Atlanta through Akron-Canton Airport after June 2, 2017.  The reduction will impact Southwest’s only remaining route from Akron-Canton to Atlanta.

While this is disappointing news, the reduction will not limit access to this key market, as Delta continues to offer customers nonstop, daily flights from CAK to Atlanta and beyond. CAK will also continue to offer nonstop service to 13 destinations and one-stop access to the globe aboard American, Delta, Spirit and United.

Akron-Canton Airport’s season route to Orlando will also be discontinued. Additionally, Dayton routes to Chicago-Midway, Orlando, and Tampa will end, also on June 2nd.

What can Ohioans expect with the closure of these two airports? Dayton will most closely be replaced by Cincinnati, with flights to Baltimore and Chicago-Midway. Those flying from Akron-Canton will have access to Cleveland International Airport, with nonstop Southwest flights to Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago-Midway, Denver, Las Vegas, Nashville, Orlando (seasonally), Phoenix-Sky Harbor, and St. Louis.
