Today’s Daily Getaway is a decent opportunity to save with Hertz (link here). The offer is billed as s 1-week standard vehicle rental for $280. However, the offer is actually given as 5,500 Hertz Gold Rewards points (equivalent to a 1-week award at standard level). This is *far* more valuable than simply a certificate for a weekly rental since the points allow other options.
Two other packages are available for more points (here and here), but they obviously cost more. They are a bit better in terms of points per dollar. I’m going to focus on the details of the base package.
Breaking down the opportunity
Getting a standard car for 1-week for $280 doesn’t really turn my head. I did a little shopping to compare prices on other rental cars. Locally, where I live, you can get a standard car through Enterprise for a week for $311. In San Francisco prices ranged from $242 to $340 over a few sample date ranges. Buying points simply for a one week rental is a losing proposition.
However, there are some great situations where this package represents some savings. First, 5,500 Hertz points will actually get you *two* weeks at the saver AnyDay level with Hertz. Much better deal.
If you’re able to use the points for a few different rentals at the AnyDay rewards level, however, you’ll probably come out even further ahead. You could go with a combo option, such as a weekly rental, a three day rental, and a one day rental for 5,450 points. Or you could go with 8 one-day rentals, which breaks down to $35 per day via this package. Depending on your market, this may or may not be a great deal.
My guess is that you’d get a better deal using Autoslash if you use this for a one week rental (SEE: Using Autoslash to save a ton on your next rental car). Also consider whether or not you actually NEED a standard car (SEE: Why you’re foolish to rent a “standard” car).
The last thing to consider is the cost of insurance. You won’t get the primary collision insurance perk from a premium credit card when you use points, as best I can find. Add this cost into the equation of whether buying the package makes sense.
Terms of the offer
- Before purchasing the points, you must have a Hertz Gold Plus Rewards member number. Once you complete a member profile, you’ll get a member number immediately.
- No more than one (1) set of points purchased through this offer are allowed per Hertz®member number. A maximum of three (3) sets of points is allowed per Hertz member number across all Hertz offers.
There are only 45 offers available, so make sure you act fast if you are interested! They’ll probably go fast, but not as fast as the Marriott points. Those sold out in about 3 minutes!
Like the other Daily Getaways, the packages go on sale at 1 p.m. EST.
