Today is the day that IHG’s Into the Nights promotion came out.  Similar to the Big Win promotions that they ran twice last year, each member is given a subset of 5-7 “tasks” that you have to do, and if you do all (or most) of them, you get a larger bonus amount

As often happens with a new promotion, the site was a bit flaky this morning.  First of all, no matter which of the 2 sites I went to, I would get either nothing or an error message when I tried to log in.

Eventually I was able to log in, but I got this “exciting” offer

ihg-into-the-nights-dan-offer-errorThat actually looks good – I’d happily complete just 2 offers for 50,000 nights!  Unfortunately, it doesn’t tell me what my offers actually ARE.  Hopefully they’ll figure this out shortly.

For reference, I am a Platinum member and have stayed 2 nights / 4 rooms with IHG in the last year – both on points (review of the Holiday Inn Chicago Countryside)

My wife’s offer

“My wife” logged in also, and her offer was much nicer.  She is just a “Member” because her Platinum status for getting the card in our latest churn has not come through yet, and has 0 stays to her name.

ihg-into-the-nights-carolyn-offerThat looks like 60,500 total points that can be earned with only 3 stays (2 of them on Saturdays and 2 at Holiday Inns).  Also, IHG often has a ton of promotions that you can add to your account (Frequent Miler has an account of earning 22,000 point with just ONE stay!).  There have been talks of people having their rewards accounts frozen for abusing that, but I think it’s not unreasonable that I can get say 20,000 points from promotions over the 3 stays.

Earning points

You always earn 10 points per dollar spent at IHG and Platinum members (which I am) earn an additional 5 points per dollar.  If you have the Chase IHG card (which I got in my July mini-churn), you get an additional 5 points per dollar.  Briefly looking at Holiday Inns around here, I’ll ballpark about $100 / night, though I bet I can get it cheaper.

So, adding it all up

  • 10,500 points – for completing all 5 of my Into the Nights offers
  • 50,000 points – bonus (I could just do 3 of the offers, but I’d need to do 2 stays anyways, so it seems like a no-brainer to do an additional stay for the extra 27,000 points)
  • 20,000 points – various IHG promotions
  • 6,000 points – $300 for 3 nights * 20 points / $.

Add it all up and we’re looking at 86,500 points for $300 out of pocket.  Again, if I decide to do this (and it’s looking likely), I’d look for cheaper hotels as well as possibly pay for them with my Barclay card (though that would make me lose out on the 5 points for paying with the IHG card)

What about you?  What was your offer like, and are you going to do it?
