Over the past few months, American Airlines and US Airways have been in a long process to combine their merging. Although they continue to operate as 2 separate airlines, this year, they have been combining many aspects of their operations, including their frequent flier programs.
Yesterday (Sunday 3/29) was the day that the two frequent flyer programs officially merged (or rather, that the US Airways Dividend Miles program stopped operating)
When I first woke up, they still had not combined, but later in the morning, when I logged on to aa.com, I saw my combined balance. This was also reported by several other bloggers such as View from the Wing and Miles to Memories.
I had about 94,000 miles in my American account and about 6,000 miles in my US Airways account (mostly from flying my red-eye flight on the way to the Family Travel for Real Life conference)

So what am I doing with those miles now?
Well, I have been in the process of trying to book a late summer getaway trip to Europe for Mrs. PWaC and I and as you may know, 2 business-class seats from North America to Europe cost 100,000 miles.

I had options to book things before the merger, but was waiting on the mile balances to be combined for a few reasons.
Of course, now that I see that they are combined, the specific flights that I was looking for are no longer showing as available 🙁

I had a feeling that a lot of bookings will be made after the merger of the points balances so I called AA last Friday to make 2 award bookings for the fall and put them on hold. I plan to ticket them tomorrow!
I hope you get the tickets you were looking for! Given the short flight to Europe from the east coast, I normally fly coach going there.
