A couple of months ago, I posted something linking to an article regarding a pair of pants that were purported to be “pick pocket proof“.  This was supposedly the 18th pick pocket attempt that was thwarted by a line of clothing from a company called Clothing Arts.

Clothing Arts reached out to me and sent me a pair of pants and shirt to check it out, so I thought I’d review them.  The idea behind the pants are that they’re good for wearing if you’re going to touristy places or anywhere else where you feel your chance of being pick pocketed is higher than usual.

Aren’t I a beautiful model?!? 🙂

I wore the pants and shirt on different days, and here are a few pictures.  Here’s me with the pick pocket proof pants.

And here’s a closer view from the side. You can see the double pocket protection – zips followed by the button. If you’re going into a “safe zone”, you can fasten the button backwards so you only have to undo the zipper to access your pockets (as you can see in these pictures)

Side view / closeup of the pants – lots of pockets!

And here’s an extreme closeup of the main pants pockets (it’s the same on both sides)

The pants were plenty comfortable. I will say that I was only at work, and so it was a little bit of a hassle trying to get my cell phone or wallet out of the pockets, if I had everything completely fastened. I guess it’s a tradeoff between security and convenience.

The only other negative was that I typically keep my cell phone in one of my pants pockets, and with the zipper, I was a little concerned about the zipper possibly scratching my cell phone display while taking it in or out.

While I felt the pants I had were a little casual (I believe Clothing Arts does sell pants that are more “dressy”), the shirt was very comfortable, and in my opinion very dressy.

There were 2 pockets on the shirt, and both pockets had a regular pocket and then a zippered pocket inside.

The zipper on the shirt pockets was very discreet and unless you were looking for it, I don’t think that you’d notice that it was there.  So that might be a good place to store extra money, valuables or ID.  It wasn’t large enough to store a passport, but it could store smaller documents or money.

So why was everyone touching me all day?stop-pickpockets

Well, when I got to work and told everyone about my pick pocket pants, of course all everyone wanted to do was try and “make sure” they were REALLY pick pocket proof!

So all day, I was constantly brushed up against or “accidentally” knocked into.  I am happy to report that I was able to make it through the day with all my valuables intact!!! 🙂

One of my co-workers did mention that all he would have to do to get around my buttoned-up, zipped-up pocket was to just slash the bottom of the pocket to make my wallet fall out.  I asked Clothing Arts about that, and they said that “The pants are actually slash-proof. They’re designed so if they are slashed, the person would literally have to sit there and take apart all of the stitches in order to get into your pocket – not a quick task!”

I do feel like the pick pocket proof pants and shirt are a little pricey for me, personally.  Which is not to say that they’re over-priced – you can definitely see that there is a LOT of extra workmanship put into these clothes which is why they cost a bunch more than typical business casual clothes.  Of course it’s a small price to pay compared to losing all your money / valuables / ID, but that depends on how likely you think you are to be pick pocketed while you travel!
