Iceland-based ultra-low cost carrier WOW air is at it again. The carrier is running yet another fare sale, and they are set to launch service to a new Midwest destination starting July 2017. This is exciting news, as WOW’s only destinations thus far have been restricted to the U.S. coasts.
Miami fare sale
Through tomorrow (3/29/17), WOW is running a fare sale for flights from Miami. The promo code WOWLYMPICS will give you 50% off round trip tickets from Miami to many of WOW’s destinations. The sample dates I tried (April 18-21) for a ticket to Dublin pulled up a fare of $330 round-trip. The normal fare is $570. This isn’t quite 50% off (so I am not sure how WOW calculates the discount), but it is still a great deal.
The travel period for the fare sale is from April 5 through June 22, 2017. The discount applies to only select flights in the travel period and is subject to availability.

WOW is expanding…to Chicago!
Iceland-based WOW air has picked Chicago as its first market in the Midwest. This is probably not surprising, considering the city’s size. As reported in the Chicago Tribune, flights between Chicago and Reykjavik will begin July 13. WOW will be offering four flights weekly, on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The service will be on an Airbus A321.
Currently, one-way flights to Reykjavik start at $99, and other European destinations start at $149. Dates with these low prices are extremely limited, however. WOW routinely offers fantastic fare sales, so they may certainly come back again. Expect to see more like $170 to $200 one-way tickets.
Remember that WOW is an ultra-low cost carrier, so you’ll pay for all extras. Your extremely low ticket price may all of a sudden not be that great of a deal if you are paying for checked bags, food, and other amenities.

You’re allowed only one personal item free of charge with WOW. It must be max 42x32x25cm/ 17x13x10in. Which is not very big.
A “normal” carry-on of 22x18x10 inches runs $40/$50 (East/West) coasts of U.S. online. At check-in it’ll cost you $10-$20 more. Checked baggage starts at $50/$70 (East/West) coasts of U.S. to KEF. Note that these prices are *per flight leg*!! If you plan on bringing even minimal baggage beyond a small personal item, costs add up fast. It might make sense to Iceland, but honestly, you’ll easily be another $200 in the hole headed to Europe, so it may not be worth booking WOW.
Pre-booking a seat will cost you $8-$12. If you want a larger seat, it’ll be $40-$60. It’s always best to buy optional extras ahead of time, as prices at check-in or at the gate are steep.
