Got an email the other day offering 12,500 American AAdvantage miles for changing your energy provider to Energy Plus.

Energy Plus is apparently only active in the following states: Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

Offer details

energy-plus-aadvantage

  • Earn 12,500 AAdvantage bonus miles as a special bonus after your second month as an Energy Plus customer.*
  • Earn AAdvantage miles every month — 2 miles for every $1 on the supply portion of your electric bill.*
  • Special promotional supply price – for your first 3 months (3 billing cycles) as a new Energy Plus customer, you’ll receive a promotional electric supply price that is 5% lower than Duke Energy Ohio’s supply rate based on the utility tariff in effect 1/1/15.* Click here to view the promotional supply rate based on your utility and account type.
  • Flexible month-to-month plan – after your promotional period ends, your ongoing electric supply price will be variable and can change each month. The supply price may be different, including higher, than the supply rate charged by your local utility company. Because Energy Plus has a Plan Ahead Feature, you can call us to find out what your electric supply price will be for your upcoming bill. Each month, you can evaluate your plan to determine whether it’s working for you. And remember, you can also cancel without a cancellation fee.*

The catch

I have switched my electric and gas providers around every couple of months for awhile now, and I will say that it is not for the faint of heart.  You REALLY need to be on top of things.  Note in the “features” above the part where it talks about the “flexible month-to-month plan”.  This is code for “the time where Energy Plus screws you over”.  When “your ongoing electric supply price will be variable and can change each month“, that is not a good thing for you.

I usually sign up for 3-6 month fixed rates, taking whichever company offers the lowest price and/or best promotion.  Then I set myself a reminder to make sure and update my account when the time frame is up.  A month or two on the “variable” plan will quickly eat up any savings you have.

It’s actually time for me to switch electric providers right now, so this email was quite fortuitous…. except… I checked and I am ALREADY an EnergyPlus customer, so I’m not eligible 🙁  Which was a bummer, because I was totally going to sign up.  I got 25,000 Delta miles a few months ago for swapping gas providers.

What about you?  Have you ever swapped your gas or electric providers for a promotion?  What was your experience like?  Is this an intriguing offer?  Let us know in the comments.
