We wrote a couple of times last week about a pretty amazing deal going on at Amazon where you can save 20% on Amazon purchases up to $500 (including gift cards)

(SEE ALSO: Act fast: 20% off Amazon purchases)

(SEE ALSO: An easy free $100 – 20% off Amazon purchases! (again; even if you did it before))

According to reports, this Amazon 20% off deal is still going strong, so I thought I’d give an update in case you missed it the first time

How to do the deal

You can read details and activate the offer here.

To take advantage of this offer, follow these steps:

  • Activate the offer first;
  • Add your Membership Rewards earning American Express card to your Amazon payment method.
  • Add items sold by Amazon LLC to cart
  • Check out and apply a minimum of one Membership Rewards points (worth $0.01).
  • You should see up to $100 off your total purchase.

While the terms stated that gift cards are not eligible, I was able to purchase five $100 Safeway e- gift cards and paid only $399.99 after applying one Membership Rewards point.

Last time you could buy Amazon gift cards (and I did) but this time it appears that Amazon gift cards are blocked.

What American Express cards can you use?

As you can see if you activate the offer, the key to getting the 20% off is that you HAVE to use American Express Membership Rewards to pay for at least part of the purchase.  You don’t have to pay for the ENTIRE purchase with points (and you shouldn’t – it’s a horrible redemption rate), even as little as 1 Membership Reward (for 1 cent).

Over on the PWaC free miles and points Facebook group, there was a question about which American Express cards you can use.  I have seen successful reports with just about every American Express card that earns Membership Rewards, including

  • Every Day and Every Day Preferred
  • Green
  • Gold
  • Platinum (all varieties of personal and business)

I’ve seen successful reports from people who are authorized users on cards as well

American Express co-branded cards (Delta, SPG, etc) do NOT earn Membership Rewards and are thus NOT eligible.

Can you do this deal a 3rd time?

One of the beauties of this deal is that people who did the deal early on (when it first came out) were able to do the deal AGAIN a 2nd time a few days later with the same account and same card

I have seen a couple of people reporting success a 3rd time but they’re rare enough that I’m inclined to think they maybe used a separate account or different Amex cards (see below)

Multiple Amazon accounts AND multiple Amex cards

One thing that may work for you, even if you’ve already done the deal and can’t do it any more, is to link MULTIPLE Amex accounts to your Amazon account.  That is of course assuming you have multiple cards that earn Membership Rewards like any self-respecting credit card aficionado (personally I have like 4 :-D). I’ve seen mixed reports on whether linking different American Express cards.  When you go to pay with your Membership Rewards account (on the Amazon checkout screen), it is linked to a specific Membership Rewards earning card, so it stands to reason that it’s possible a 2nd or 3rd card would allow you to take advantage for each card.  Let us know your data points in the comments

And of course if you have separate accounts (some resellers I know keep a Prime and a non-Prime account, or accounts for you and a spouse or significant other), you should be able to take advantage of this deal for each account
