This morning, Mommy Points posted a list of some increased portal bonuses for today.  One that stuck out at me was 12x for Sears at the United MileagePlus portal!!

(SEE MORE: Earning miles through shopping portals)

Because of the way that Sears handles gift cards, you can actually double dip on purchases at Sears

An example:

  • Go through the United portal, buy $1000 of Sears gift cards.
  • Go through the United portal AGAIN, and use those $1000 in gift cards to buy $1000 of “stuff”.

Maximizing it up to 29x points

If you have a Chase Freedom card, this month the 5% quarterly bonus is on “department stores”, and Sears is a qualifying store.

freedom2014categoriesYou can earn 5% on your first $1500 in purchases with your Freedom card this quarter.   Also, if you haven’t seen the 5% categories for the Chase Freedom card for Q1 of 2015 or the entire Chase Freedom 2015 5% calendar, PWaC has you covered!

If you don’t have the Freedom card, now is a good time to get one!  The signup bonus is up to 20,000 points (double what it normally is) – I have the card and it’s a great place to store Chase Ultimate Rewards without paying an annual fee.  Make sure you have one before you try to close a Sapphire or Ink card – don’t do what I did and almost lose 50,000 points!

Do you need the Chase United card to get the full bonus

One thing that I’ve noticed is that the United shopping portal seems to often reserve their BEST bonuses for holders of the Chase United card.  If you are not logged in when you visit the United shopping portal, Sears will only show as 8x points (which is still REALLY good!)  It was only when I logged in that I saw the 12x bonus.

I tried logging in with my wife’s account (she also does not have the Chase United card) and she also shows only 8x.

Makes me even more glad I picked up the Chase United card in a recent churn.  And I still have those 2 United Club passes burning a hole in my pocket!
