Last month, for my trip to Kyoto, we flew Japan Airline from San Francisco to Tokyo Haneda airport, then continued onto Osaka. I opted for the first morning flight and spending a night at the airport hotel since I didn’t want to miss the connection. But as it turned out, an international domestic transfer at Tokyo Haneda airport is super easy.

Tokyo Haneda Airport has three terminals – one international terminal and two domestic terminals. Japan Airlines fly out of Terminal 1 while ANA operates out of Terminal 2. There is a free shuttle bus runs every 4 minutes, and it stops at Terminal 2 first before reaching Terminal 1. The ride normally takes less than 10 minutes.

International Domestic Transfer at Tokyo Haneda – via Monorail
Another super easy alternative is to take the Monorail. Passengers transferring between international and domestic flights can ride the monorail for free! All you need to do is to stop by the Information Counter, show your passport and boarding pass to receive a free Monorail ticket.

In International Terminal, the Informational Counter is located in the arrival hall after you clear custom. The platform for Monorail to domestic terminals is located one level up at the departure level. Simply show the attendant your Monorail tickets as you enter the platform, and again as you exit the platform at Terminal 1 or 2 (they will collect your ticket as you exit).

In Terminal 1, the information counter is located at level one, not far from the entrance to the platform for Monorail towards International terminal. I assume the same for Terminal 2 where ANA flies out of.

International Domestic Transfer at Tokyo Haneda – via Keikyu Line
Similar to Monorail, passengers can ride free on the Keikyu Line when transferring between international and domestic terminals. At international terminal, the entrance to Keikyu Line is directly opposite to the Monorail entrance.

Transfer by Monorail was super easy. But trying to figure out where to check our luggage for the Osaka flight was a different story. After getting off the Monorail, we took the elevator to departure level. There was South Wing and North Wing in Terminal 1, but no clear signs showing where flights to other cities in Japan will be departing from. After walking the wrong direction to the busy South Wing, we were told to go to counter 54-56 in North Wing! You can find detailed map of Terminal 1 here.

Is there enough time to make a 3:15 pm international flight leaving HND?
In theory I think so. JAL requires one hour minimum connecting time at Haneda, assuming you are flying JAL. https://www.jal.co.jp/en/5971/readme/mct.html
You will be really counting on your domestic flight isn’t delayed. So the risk is for you to take.
