Should you apply for the Chase United 40,000 mile offer?
(I mean, do you even want to fly United? Think carefully about that one…)
Chase typically sets the United MileagePlus Explorer card’s welcome offer between 30,000 and 50,000 miles. With the 5/24 rule, you’ll want to make sure you’re getting the best offer for your spend on any new Chase card. Mathematically speaking, let’s value United miles at 1.5 cents per point. That means that the $100 statement credit is worth around 6,667 MileagePlus miles. So, the 50,000 welcome offer would typically be more valuable.
40,000 MileagePlus miles is enough to get you a roundtrip anywhere within the US, Alaska, or Canada. Or splurge on a one-way saver first class ticket to Mexico, Central America, or the Caribbean!
That’s to to say you shouldn’t apply! Cash is king, after all, $100 in your pocket is worth more than a pile of miles you can’t use. (Yes, I have to remind myself to stop hoarding miles quite often…)

Ultimately, you’ll have to decide for yourself. I think this is a great offer, especially with the MileagePlus Explorer’s new benefits, but I’d probably hold out to be honest. Although 50,000 miles is a common offer on the card, we’ve seen it as high as 60,000 or even 70,000 MileagePlus!

I just noticed on the Chase site, while paying my bill, they were offering 50k points but I didn’t notice a statement credit that I noticed. Anyone else get this offer? I wasn’t sure if it was a good deal.
@Candace — Yeah, the 50k probably does not have the statement credit. Most people would consider the extra 10k miles to be worth more than $100. Even better is to search for a random reservation at United’s website and see if that gets you 50k + $100.

I did not receive my statement credit either….sent chase an email and got a response of there was no known bonus…I even sent them a screenshot of the offer….I saved it just in case..
I’m canceling my United card because of their dropping the bonus of 10,000 miles each year. That was my favorite part of that card.
40k + $100 isn’t the best deal we’ve seen on this card, but I got it anyway.
If you want the United card, there’s an opportunity cost in waiting for a better offer. Since it’s subject to 5/24 if you wait you’re also leaving other deals on the table.
Agreed, my GF got in on the 70,000 + $100 statement credit a while back which was awesome, but this offer isn’t anything to shy away from if you want the card
