This week, American Express announced another expansion to their growing Centurion Lounge network.  The financial company will be bringing it’s newest addition to Charlotte Douglas International Airport, located near Charlotte, North Carolina.  The lounge won’t be open until 2020, but we’ll be looking forward to it!

A Rapidly Growing Centurion Lounge Network

In the past year, we’ve seen massive expansion from American Express’s lounge network.

Details on the Centurion Lounge Charlotte Douglas International

Charlotte will be American Express’s 5th Centurion Lounge on the east coast, assuming the JFK lounge is completed first.  CLT is expanding rapidly, as North Carolina’s economy continues to thrive and draw new people into the area.  The airport is currently building an expansion between Concourses D and E that will include the new Centurion Lounge, located post-security.

Details are slim at this point, but we can typically expect great food and beverage options, good customer service, comfortable (but often overcrowded) seating, useful workspaces, and maybe even some showers and additional services.  We do know that the new Centurion Lounge will occupy about 13,000 square feet of space, rivaling the largest Centurions in the network.  The Centurion Lounge at Charlotte Douglas is slated to open in 2020, which means we’ve got quite some time to wait.

One of my favorite things about the Centurion Lounges is the variety.  Every lounge I’ve been to has offered a different menu, since each one has its own executive chef and mixologists.  They typically lean heavy into the local cuisine, while putting a bit of a modern or cultural spin on the dishes.  Although it’s too early to hire the staff, AmEx often gets fantastic chefs for their food, making the lounges some of the best in the states.

I’m torn on the Centurion Lounges.  On one hand, they’re an awesome experience when they’re not overcrowded.  AmEx really does a good job on the design and the food and beverages.  BUT…they’re almost always crowded.
