As Alaska Airlines promised during the merger with Virgin America, there will be “more to love” with the combined airlines. Today Alaska introduces four inflight services,

Complimentary Free Chat

Beginning today, Alaska flyers on Gogo-equipped flights will be able to send messages using iMessage, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger from 35,000 feet. Alaska is the first and only domestic airline to offer this service free of charge, and yes, it is fully emoji-compatible!

Free Chat launched in beta today, with full functionality deploying Jan. 24. To use Free Chat, you need to sign into you Gogo Wi-Fi accounts and follow a few easy steps to begin chatting. You can sign up a Gogo account for free and you do not need any Wi-Fi pass to use this service.

New Premium Class

Alaska’s new class of service debuts this week on select routes and offer guests four extra inches of legroom, early boarding, complimentary snacks and alcoholic beverages. You can upgrade to the new Premium Class for $15 to $79, in addition to base fares, at the time of booking or during check-in, and at the airport. Alaska MVP, Gold and Gold 75K members are eligible for complimentary upgrades into Premium Class at the time of booking, or up to 24 hours in advance of travel, depending on status and the fare purchased.

More than 40 percent of Alaska’s fleet has been retrofitted with the new section. By year-end, more than 90 percent will feature this new class of service. Premium Class is not currently available on flights operated by Virgin America or Horizon Air.

My family flew Alaska Airlines to Honolulu for Thanksgiving holiday last November. Not knowing about the new class of service, we found ourselves lucky seating in row 7 which was incredibly roomy. While there was no free premium snacks or alcoholic beverages, we really enjoyed the extra legroom for the five-hour flight.

Free Movie through March

Bring your own devices on your next Alaska flight! Through March 31, Alaska is offering free, unlimited access to its entire catalog of entertainment available to stream on your devices, including Hollywood movies and popular TV shows. New titles available to view in January include Hollywood hits Nice Guys, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, X-Men Apocalypse, and Ice Age Collision Cours,

Upgraded food and beverage options

My kids always love the signature cheese plate whenever we fly Alaska. Later this month, new food and drink options will be added on the snack and beverage cart, including new premium wines from Washington State, new premium craft beer and sparkling wine.

Look for Alaska’s new inflight services on your next flight and be sure to bring your device! When you chat with friends and family while watching a free movie at 35,000 feet, the long flight across the country will seem short at the end.
