I certainly didn’t see this one coming! It seems the Dallas/Ft. Worth area is about to get it’s THIRD carrier flying the DFW-KEF (Reykjavik) route! Yesterday, American Airlines announced they would join Icelandair and WOW Air in serving the Icelandic capital. Vasu Raja, vice president, Network & Schedule Planning, had this to say about the new service:
“Reykjavik has become a very popular leisure destination and we look forward to giving our customers the opportunity to experience Iceland’s unique landscape of geysers, volcanoes and hot springs with our new direct service next summer…The new destination complements our continued growth from Dallas-Fort Worth, including Rome and Amsterdam.”
American DFW-KEF Details
This service is set to commence on June 7, 2018, and will be a three-weekly, seasonal service, with the season ending in late-October. Per American, flight schedules are:
- Departs DFW at 8:20 p.m., Arrives KEF at 9:15 a.m. (Next day)
- Departs KEF at 11:10 a.m., Arrives DFW at 2:50 p.m.
This route is scheduled to be operated by a Boeing 757-200, with 176 seats in business and economy. Finally, tickets will go on sale November 20, 2017 — so set a reminder for yourself if this is something you want to book!
Using AAdvantage Miles
If American’s award chart is to be believed (even though sAAver award space is pretty bAAd), you should be able to book this flight with the following amounts of points:

The Competition
American must have realized with both Icelandair and WOW Air serving this route nonstop, they were stealing valuable “hometown” customers from American. Currently, neither carrier have started service, but are planning to in 2018:
- Icelandair is set to operate this route four times per week starting on May 30, 2018 (Boeing 757 with business and economy seating)
- WOW Air is set to operate this route three times per week starting May 24, 2018 (Airbus A330 with economy seating)
Conclusion
I’m curious to see if either carrier cry “uncle” with American entering–beyond the Dallas metro area, American will be able to offer connections to fill their plane. Icelandair and WOW Air have no domestic connection opportunities; however, they do offer 1-stop connections to Europe.
