Last month, we covered some great news in the travel world – Capital One is joining the elite points currencies with transferrable airline partners!

As of today, December 10th, the transfer program is LIVE!  Go for it, transfer all those Capital One points you’ve been racking up with great cards (like the Venture and Spark Miles) and snag some killer redemptions!

Capital One Transfer Partners

Now that the system is live, Capital One has also announced the addition of two new airline transfer partners

Here’s the list of airlines Capital One is partnering with, along with their transfer rate (Capital One Miles : Partner Miles):

  • Aeromexico (2:1.5)
  • Air Canada Aeroplan (2:1.5)
  • Air France/KLM (2:1.5)
  • Alitalia (2:1.5)
  • Avianca (2:1.5)
  • Cathay Pacific (2:1.5)
  • Emirates (new partner! 2:1)
  • Etihad (2:1.5)
  • EVA (2:1.5)
  • Finnair (2:1.5)
  • Hainan (2:1.5)
  • Qantas (2:1.5)
  • Qatar (2:1.5)
  • Singapore Airlines (new partner! 2:1)

Capital One released a few more details too, noting that you’ll have to transfer a minimum of 1,000 points (which will get you 500 or 750 miles, depending on the partner).  You can increase that amount in increments of 100 Capital One points (50 or 75 partner miles).  This new benefit will be available for cardholders of the Capital One Venture, Venture One, Spark Miles, and Spark Miles Select cards.

Why this matters to YOU!

We’re all about getting the best bang for our buck (or point) here.  When it comes to value, transferrable currencies are best of the best.  Not only do they usually have decent redemption options on their own, their value really comes in to play.  Right now, there are 4 major transferrable points systems – American Express Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou Points, and Capital One.  Marriott Rewards also has great Air + Travel Packages, but I wouldn’t call that a true transferrable currency.

These points are also easy to earn.  Say you’ve got the Venture card from Capital One.  You’re earning 2 points per dollar on everything with the Venture card.  If you need LifeMiles, for example, that’s 1.5 Avianca LifeMiles per dollar spent on everything!  While there are certainly better bonus category cards out there, this isn’t a currency to ignore.

The addition of Emirates and Singapore Airlines is also great news.  In just one month, Capital One has already added two new partners, which proves they’re taking this new feature seriously!  While we can’t assume they’ll add two new partners every month, it’s a great sign that Capital One’s currency will be a valuable contender in the points and miles world.

Personally, I’d love to see some new, interesting travel partners added.  If you’re listening Capital One, how about say, IcelandAir?  Spirit?  Brussels Airlines?

Who would you guys like to see added to Capital One’s transfer partners?
