I’ve been out on vacation the past couple of days, so this may have already been covered, but I got an interesting email today regarding the BBVA Compass NBA Card.  bbva-nba-credit-cardIn case you are not aware of the NBA card by BBVA Compass, it’s a card that is not super interesting during most of the year, but has 2 pretty amazing features.  During the NBA All-Star Weekend as well as for the 2 weeks during the NBA finals, it gets 5% on ALL purchases.

You can read more about the BBVA Compass NBA card as well as my reasoning for getting the card, on this post – Why I just got an NBA credit card (and you should too).

Changes to the BBVA NBA Card

Over the weekend, I got the following email

bbva-compass-nba-changes

Beginning on July 1, 2016:

  • You will earn 1 point for each $1 of net Qualifying Purchases on your Card.
  • You will earn 2 points for each $1 spent in the Gas and Supermarket purchase categories, for the first $1,500 of combined net Qualifying Purchases made during each calendar quarter in those categories, and 1 point for each $1 spent over $1,500.
  • You will earn 3 points for each $1 spent on net Qualifying Purchases for the NBA purchase category for the first $1,500 of combined net Qualifying Purchases made during each calendar quarter, and 1 point for each $1 spent over $1,500.
  • You will earn 5 points for each $1 of net Qualifying Purchases made during the NBA All-Star Weekend and two weeks of the NBA Finals for the first $5,000 of combined net Qualifying Purchases (per event), and 1 point for each $1 spent over $5,000.

So the net-net (a basketball pun!) is that the 5x points on all purchases during the NBA All-Star Weekend and NBA Finals will be capped at $5,000.  I can’t imagine WHY they would possibly be wanting to limit that to $5,000 ($250 in rewards).  Especially given the recent shutdowns of Wells Fargo card (we’ve been discussing that over on the Points With a Crew Slack channel in realtime)

I was fairly worried about this, given that the NBA Finals are coming up here shortly, but they also included language saying “These changes do not affect current spend promotions related to the upcoming NBA Finals, June 2-16, 2016.”.

So that’s nice at least!  Also, they gave us language in regards to the dates of qualifying purchases for the NBA Finals, which I know some people were interested in, especially if the Finals do not go the full 7 games.  Personally I bought a few thousand dollars of gift cards during All-Star weekend, but it was challenging with fraud alerts and credit limits.

Good luck out there and happy spending!
