Earlier today I posted some breaking news about a shooting this afternoon at the Columbus Ohio Airport (CMH) that led to one man dead (apparently killed by airport police).  The shooting happened at around 1pm Eastern time.

Courtesy of the Columbus Dispatch, here’s a video of Sgt. Rich Weiner, a police department spokesman, explaining what they know about the situation

It looks like there were actually 2 separate (but connected) incidents.  1st, a vehicle was illegally parked at the airport in the passenger dropoff area.  While police were responding to that, a man entered the terminal and attempted to purchase a ticket with a fake ID.  He then returned back to the car outside the terminal, was confronted by the police, and produced a knife.  He apparently lunged at the officer, and shots were fired.

At that point, the man got BACK up, and headed back towards the terminal where a 2nd round of shots were fired, and the man died.  It is not yet clear whether he was initially injured or not.

As of now, CMH airport is operating normally – reports were that even this afternoon when things were going on, most people inside the airport were not even aware of anything going on.  WHIO Columbus has some additional reporting on the story.

Columbus Airport police have just released a press release (PDF) detailing what is known about the situation
