So the other day when I was compiling a list of hotels that give out free dinner, I was once again reminded of the Drury Inn.  Drury Inn was actually mentioned to me by one of my friends when I first started blogging, but it’s taken me awhile

Locations

Drury Inn is headquartered in Missouri, and remains mostly in the Midwest.  Here’s their location map – they have locations in the states that are highlighted in white on the map below.

Drury Inn has locations in the states in white (which seems backwards to me but hey it’s from THEIR website 😀 )

So a niche, depending on where you live or where you’re traveling.  The full property list is here.

Free Food (TONS of it!)

This is what brought me back to Drury Inn.  From their “Special Services” page:

Free Hot QuickStart breakfast

– Hot means sausage and eggs, not bread and a toaster. Our hot breakfast includes scrambled eggs, sausage, Belgian waffles, biscuits and gravy. Plus fresh fruit, bagels, pastries, juices, hot and cold cereals, toast, milk, coffee, tea and more. Free hot breakfast is served daily from 6:00 – 9:30 a.m. weekdays (Monday – Friday) and from 7:00 – 10:00 a.m. on weekends (Saturday & Sunday).spserv_kickback_food

Drury Inn and Suites Evening kickback

– Our rotating menu features a variety of hot food, including chicken strips, macaroni & cheese, hot dogs, baked potatoes, broccoli cheddar soup and more! Plus, beer, wine, mixed drinks and soft drinks are served everyday. There’s something for everyone at Drury’s 5:30 Kickback. It’s a snack for some, meal for others and free for all! Click here for additional details and to download our 5:30 Kickback menu.

That’s not to mention the free soft drinks and popcorn every afternoon from 3 to 10 p.m.!

Pets

Drury Inn is one of the few chain hotels whose pet policy allows pets.  From their FAQ:

Pets are accepted at all Drury Hotels, if state and local laws permit. Rooms with pets will be charged a daily cleaning fee of $10 per room plus tax at all Drury and Pear Tree Inn by Drury brand hotels. Pets are free at Thrifty Inn hotels. Service animals are welcome at all Drury Hotels free of charge. There is a limit of two pets per room and may only include dogs and cats.

We don’t have pets (or in another manner of speaking, we have 6 of them :-D), but I know that there are people that do and love to travel with them.

If you're looking to travel with pets, Drury Inn is a great choice. Free breakfast AND dinner and pets stay at no charge!

Rewards club (Gold Key)

drury-inn-gold-keyHere’s the one downside – their rewards program is pretty bad, and there aren’t really any ways to get a ton of points.  You earn 10x points when staying at Drury Inn, and they do have a credit card (offered by Commerce Bank).

The credit card gives another 5x on spend at Drury Hotels, but just 1x everywhere else.  There’s a 10,000 point bonus upon your first spending, and no annual fee.  10,000 points is enough to get a free night at some of the hotels (others cost more)

Best Rate Guarantee

Okay so if it’s hard to get free nights with reward stays, what about a Best Rate Guarantee.  I’ve had some success with Best Western and IHG giving free rooms if you can find a lower price online, but Drury Inn’s BRG doesn’t work that way.

If we made a mistake, we will fix it. It’s that simple.

So they’ll just match the lower rate, which is nice, but not super useful for travel hackers.

I love the free stuff, and they really seem to embody my philosophy of why hotels like this are WAY better than the so-called “nice” hotels.  Still, without a good way to get Gold Key points, it’s probably one that I would use very often.  This may be a good time to use something like the Barclay Arrival card, especially for family travel with pets.
