Is the Companion Pass worth it?

You’ve heard it before, the travel world loves the Companion Pass.  Who wouldn’t?  The Southwest Companion Pass can provide extreme value for those that can use it well.  Essentially a buy one get one on all Southwest flights booked for that time period, it’s awesome for families, couples, or folks that just like bringing a travel buddy along!

As with all things in life, the Companion Pass is only good if you can use it.  My family got some great redemptions from the Companion Pass in 2016 and 2017, but personally I won’t go out of my way to get it again.

This was my view for quite a few weekend trips during 2016 and 2017, the years I held a Companion Pass!

Should you jump on this offer?

If you can answer yes to these 3 questions then it’s probably a good deal for you (and I’ll explain why below):

  1. Do you regularly travel with someone else?
  2. Do you have a lot of domestic travel coming up?
  3. Are you under 5/24?

If you answered yes to those three questions you’re in good shape for the REAL Companion Pass.  A regular Companion Pass technique would have you opening two Southwest cards for the full Companion Pass, good for (at this time) 2019 and 2020 travel.  I won’t get into the nuances about Companion Pass tactics here, but check out some of the other blogs for more information!

Another option would be something like the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, which gives you 50,000 CHASE points after spending the same $4000 in the first 3 months. Because Chase points can transfer to Southwest 1:1, it could be a better option unless you’re doing a LOT of Southwest traveling where you’d earn that companion pass.

Ultimately, if you’ve got 5/24 space for a new Chase Southwest card, you’ve got some domestic travel you need to book soon, and your airport has some decent Southwest availability, then this could be a good deal.  Remember though, this Companion Pass is really half a Companion Pass, since it’s only good through the end of 2019.  All your domestic travel is this year?  Go for it.  Otherwise, go for the regular Companion Pass, and hit that 110,000 Rapid Rewards mark!

Then, you’ll have plenty of points to burn with your Companion!
