While many airlines charge fees to change or cancel your flights, they often do give waivers for storms or unusual

Southwest Airlines is one of the few examples of an airline that does NOT charge for changes or cancellations – see Southwest’s amazing cancellation policy.

American Airlines Phoenix travel waiver

Phoenix is expecting record high temperatures this week, with the highs going up into the 120s.  That’s hot… even for Phoenix 🙂  As such, according to a variety of news outlets, American Airlines is allowing free travel waivers if you are traveling in, out or through PHX airport Monday (today) through Wednesday, June 19-21.  Reports are that Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport fights departing between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. could face delays.

I tried to find an official news release on aa.com but was not able to find one.  You can reschedule by contacting AA reservations at 1-800-433-7300.

How airplanes / runways / airports react to extreme heat

It was also interesting reading some of the reports of how airports and airplanes react to extreme heat.  There were some things I read about asphalt liquefying, but that appears to be an urban legend (asphalt liquefies but not until closer to 250 degrees Fahrenheit)

AZCentral reports that “flight delays happen in extreme heat because higher temperatures affect aircraft performance. A big factor: higher temperatures thin the air, allowing less air to flow through the engines, producing less thrust. This also affects aircraft weight, takeoff speed and required runway length”
