If you have a family of five like I do, you probably know finding hotels for large family is not an easy task, especially if you want to redeem points for the stay. The job gets even harder when you have a family of eight like Dan does!

Hotels for a large family

Have you ever tried to squeeze your large family into a hotel room that is meant for four? If you have, you would know that arrangement simply makes the stay uncomfortable. You are bound to hear kids complain! Whenever my family vacation in Mexico, we usually stay in a two-bedroom-two-bathroom unit at timeshare resorts. We all love the space! But domestically, it is a bit more challenging to find hotels that could fit a family of 5 to 8 people. Here is a short list of hotels with big rooms and free breakfast:

  • Hyatt Place
  • Hyatt House
  • Residence Inn by Marriott
  • Homewood Suites by Hilton
  • Home2Suites by Hilton
  • Embassy Suites by Hilton
  • Staybridge Suites by IHG
  • Holiday Inn Express & Suites by IHG

Most of these brands have rooms with two beds plus a sofa bed that can fit 5 or 6 people. Some even have two bedroom suites with full kitchen that can fit up to 8 people, and several of those are on the list of hotels that give dinner for free as well. Because they are part of a hotel chain, you can often redeem points for a free stay!

Each hotel chain also operates vacation ownership properties (aka timeshare). Vacation properties often have two bedroom units that can easily fit a family of 8. But most of the time you can not redeem loyalty points, or it requires a ton of points for just one night. If you are willing to pay cash, you can always consider renting a week from timeshare owners (the best source is probably Redweek).

Awesome redemption of hotels for large family

Believe or not, sometimes I choose our vacation destination based on what hotel accommodation I can find. I do not want to pay for two rooms if I can avoid it. A few years back, after spending Christmas in southwest Florida with my in-laws, we took the high-speed ferry from Fort Myers beach to Key West and spent five wonderful nights there. The trigger? Sheraton Suites Key West had rooms that fit all five of us at 12,000 points per night, and 5th night was free! It would have cost us well over $500 a night because our stay included New Year’s Eve.  One summer we made a three-day detour to Ocean City Maryland on our drive from Philadelphia to Washington D.C. We did that because I found Holiday Inn Suites for 35,000 a night and the non-fancy room fit all five of us just fine!
