Everything about the World Series is expensive, from the tickets, to the airfare, to the hotel and lodging costs and everything in between. While miles and points can’t solve everything to make your trip to the World Series cheaper (it will be tough to find award availability), it can do wonders in finding World Series hotel deals

Unlike the Super Bowl, the 2018 World Series location is not decided until shortly before the series starts (and we know who’s playing). Now that the Championship Series are done, we know that it’s Boston and Los Angeles.  Games 1 and 2 are October 23rd and 24th in Boston, and Games 3-5 are Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Los Angeles. To show the value of points for getting World Series hotel deals, I checked a variety of hotel chains and brands for a 3 night stay for Friday October 26, 2018 and checking out Monday October 28, in Los Angeles.

World Series hotel deals with IHG (Holiday Inn, Staybridge Suites, etc)

First, let’s look at the IHG for some World Series hotel deals – this is the company that owns Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn, Staybridge Suites, etc.  As I mentioned, most of their hotels do not show any availability for the weekend of October 2018, but I did find a couple that had points availability – including the Holiday Inn Burbank

Cash rate is $208 / night (plus tax!), but you can get it for only 30,000 points / night!  That’s a value of about 0.75 cents per point, which is slightly higher than but inline with what I would typically value IHG points for.

If you don’t have any IHG points, you can Buy IHG MilesInvalid request error occurred..  The default rate is $12.50 per 1000 points if you buy 10,000 or more.  My recommendation if you have no IHG points would be to buy 15000 IHG points for $67.50, then use Cash and Points.  This wouldn’t make sense at this particular hotel, but might for other hotel options.

Another option would be to transfer your Chase points to IHG 1:1 if you have a premium Chase card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Chase Sapphire Reserve

World Series hotel deals with Hilton

Here’s an example of the Hampton Inn and Suites Los Angeles / Hollywooda screenshot of a web page

This World Series hotel deal is about the same as IHG – you’re still getting about 0.5 cent per point value.  You can Buy or Gift Hilton HHonors Points here.  The default rate is $10 per 1000 points, which would mean paying $600 for the 60,000 points you’d need to book this room (so not that great of a deal if you’re starting from 0).

You can get a ton of Hilton points from the all-time high welcome offers they have on their credit cards, but of course those bonus points aren’t going to show up in time to book this deal.  I guess it’s just like Cleveland fans – wait ’til next year 🙂

World Series hotel deals with Hyatt

Hyatt actually had the best availability of any of the chains – nearly every Hyatt in Chicago had some availability showing.  The best deal seemed to be the Hyatt Regency LAX

17,000 points or $384 / night!  That’s a value of nearly 3 cents per point, which is outstanding for Hyatt points. That also comes with Club Access (you may be able to find a standard (i.e. cheaper) room if you can wait for availability to open up

You can buy Hyatt points, and you can also transfer your Chase points to Hyatt 1:1 if you have a premium Chase card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Chase Sapphire Reserve

Other hotel chains like Marriott, Best Western, Wyndham, Starwood and others are also potential ways to score World Series hotel deals.  When I searched, those hotel chains were all completely sold out, but availability changes all the time as people’s plans change and hotels open up additional availability, so check back periodically!
