Earlier this week we talked about the current Chase IHG card going away, at least for new signups.  Some of (most of? all of?) the official links had been pulled.  My link has the offer for 60,000 IHG points and is still available at the time of this writing – you can compare the Chase IHG card to other hotel cards here. It gives 60,000 IHG points after spending $1000 in the first 3 months.  The free night certificate is after paying the $49 annual fee on the card anniversary.

New Chase IHG cards coming?

The rumor on the street was that the current $49 annual fee card might be going away to be replaced by 2 cards

  • One with a $29 annual fee, 60,000 point signup bonus and no anniversary night
  • One with an $85 annual fee, 80,000 point signup bonus and a free anniversary night

Now Spencer over at Straight to the Points has shared a screenshot given to him by a friend purporting to be a marketing image of the new IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card

So it looks like our suspicions were pretty close to what appears to be the reality, at least for the Chase IHG Premier card.  The annual fee looks to be $89 instead of $85 but this premium card comes with

  • 80,000 IHG Rewards points as a signup bonus (similar to the bonus on the old card) and 5,000 bonus points if you add an authorized user within 3 months of opening the card
  • 10,000 bonus points after spending $20,000 and making an additional purchase each year
  • Anniversary free night certificate at an “eligible hotel”
  • 20% discount buying IHG points
  • 4th night free on award stays

Also Platinum elite status (woohoo!), no foreign transaction fees, 10x points at IHG and a Global Entry credit if you don’t already have like 50 cards with that (or a big family like mine!)

Some of the intriguing questions I have:

  • What does an “eligible hotel” mean on the free night?  Is this changing to be category limited (like the Hyatt or Marriott free nights) or is it just fine-print-speak for any hotel that has a room
  • The 20% discount on buying IHG points doesn’t seem too attractive since it’s likely on the full “regular” price.  Given how often they run sales and the fact that you can almost always get points for about 0.7 cents per point using cash and points
  • Will this new card not be subject to Chase 5/24 like the existing one is?
  • 4th night free is in line with similar deals at Hilton and Starwood (where it’s 5th night) and could be useful to some people, especially on Point Breaks.

There do not appear to be any details that I’ve seen on the “basic” version of the IHG card, nor what might happen to those of us who already have the card

What do you think?  Will you be signing up for the new Chase IHG Rewards Premier card?
