visaThe office supply stores seem to love to run promotions on Visa and Mastercard gift cards.  Last time, it was $15 off $250 in Visa gift cards, and the time before that it was $20 off $300 in Mastercard cards.

This week it’s back to Visa, and an instant $15 off a $300 purchase.  This is not in the weekly ad anywhere, but there appears to be copious signage in-store (I can confirm from the one store I went to)

Hat tip to Miles to Memories via Frequent Miler.

This is a great opportunity to stock up on Chase Ultimate Rewards, since if you have the Chase Ink card (as I do), then you get 5x points at all office supply stores.  I signed up for a new card for Carolyn last month with the increased signup bonus, and so this is a great opportunity to work on the $5,000 spending requirement in the first 3 months.

Fine print says 1 per customer.

The best deal is if you can find the $200 gift cards

  • 2 $200 gift cards + $6.95 activation fee= $413.90
  • $15 off instantly
  • Total is $398.90, for a (slight) profit, plus nearly 2000 Chase points.

Still works with $100 gift cards

  • 3 $100 gift cards + $5.95 activation fee= $317.85
  • $15 off instantly
  • Total is $302.85, at a (slight) cost, plus just over 1500 Chase points.

Although my local Office Maxes are much more annoyingly located than my Office Depot or Staples stores, I took a trip up there this evening and alas, they were out of $200 cards.  The employee also had no clue about the $15 discount, and tried to charge me $317.85 before I mentioned the deal.  He went over to the gift card rack and saw the sign, but then still didn’t know how to apply the coupon.  In the end he just took $5 off each of the activation fees.

These are issued by Metabank and should work as debit cards (for Bluebird, etc.)
