Norwegian has continued to revolutionize the landscape of long haul economy flights. With continued expansion into the United States, the low cost airline is poised to become one of the primary transatlantic carriers for budget-conscious travelers. And now they have their sights set on other markets.

As reported by the Telegraph, Norwegian’s CEO now has his eye on expanding service to include Japan and Chinese cities. No concrete routes have been announced, but the airline is certainly considering expansion. This comes on the heels of new service to several cities in New England (SEE: Norwegian officially launches 3 US Bases).

Norwegian already flies to Thailand, its only destination in eastern Asia. Adding service to either Tokyo or Beijing would open up huge new markets for the airline.

Bjorn Kos, Norwegian’s CEO, also mentioned potential service to African countries, calling out Nigeria and South Africa by name. If service is added from their London Gatwick hub, they will certainly bring some competition to both Virgin Atlantic and British Airways on the routes to South Africa.

Norwegian’s interesting model for success

The company will continue with its model of adding service to cities with smaller, cheaper airports. This unorthodox practice resulted in the addition of interesting routes such as Bergen, Norway to Providence, RI. Norwegian is also seeking to integrate its schedule and flights with other low cost airlines in Europe, which would allow U.S. travelers to reach many, many more European destinations very cheaply.

Norwegian will likely announce a new non-U.S. route in the next few months. I’m eagerly anticipating where this will be.
