A few weeks ago, I wrote a story about how my mom was denied for the Chase Sapphire Reserve card.

(Unexpectedly bit by Chase 5/24)chase-sapphire-reserve-logo

She had signed up in-branch just before the deadline expired to get the higher signup bonus of 100,000 Ultimate Rewards points.  Her application went to pending but then a little bit later, she got the dreaded letter – your application has been denied due to too many accounts!

[I’m over 5/24… but I just applied for a Chase Ink anyways]

My mom was super bummed because they are planning a trip to Europe this summer and had been counting on the CSR to help pay for some of the hotels and other expenses on the trip.

Overturning 5/24 – my experience

First off – I had my mom pull her free credit report from Credit Sesame (affiliate link), which showed the following

  • April 2015 – Amex AND Citi – this was the Costco Visa and when it changed from Amex to Citi she apparently got 2 different hits.  She said that she canceled the card so who knows what paperwork she may or may not have signed.
  • May 2015 – Lowe’s credit card (I know… I know…)
  • September 2015 – Chase Southwest Business
  • December 2015 – Chase Marriott card
  • February 2016 – we think an authorized user card
  • August 2016 – BJs store card

Calling Chase for overturning Chase 5/24

When my parents came into town a bit later, we decided to give it a try and see what the Chase reps would call.  My mom called the Chase reconsideration line and when the representative got on, she authorized me to talk to them.

From the credit report that we had pulled, I knew what *I* had thought that her new accounts had been (above), but I was curious to see what CHASE thought her new accounts had been.

They responded with only 5 accounts, and one of those was an authorized user account (for my Dad’s IHG card).  Once we gave them the “magic words” (I am not financially responsible for this account), they were able to rerun the application and get an approval!

We ended up having to close down one of the Southwest cards in order to free up enough credit line to get at least a $10,000 credit limit (that was listed as the minimum allowed to open up a CSR).  The whole process took most of an hour but at the end of the day, the rep confirmed the 100,000 Ultimate Rewards and my mom gave me a big hug 😀
