Lantana Airport has been closed for the third weekend in a row due to visits by President Trump to nearby Mar-a-Lago resort. The secret service shuts operations down for security reasons within a 10-mile radius of the Florida club while Trump is present. Small Lantana Airport is given little warning when visits will occur.

The closing of the airfield is wreaking havoc on the operations and revenues of the small businesses that use Lantana Airport. While the airport is only utilized by small propeller-driven planes and helicopters, the airfield is vital to the operation and financial success of several small businesses. One banner-flying company reports that it has already lost upward of $40,000 in potential revenue.

The closure of Lantana field has significant economic impacts on 28 businesses that employ 200 people. President Trump has been a major proponent of small businesses, but the security measures surrounding his visits to his favorite Florida vacation spot are having a significant negative impact on the small businesses at Lantana Airport. Hopefully a more balanced approach to security can be found that allows for the use of the airfield during presidential visits. Business owners and pilots at Lantana are open to negotiating a solution that allows them to operate while still meeting necessary security precautions.

Oddly enough, nearby Palm Beach International Airport is substantially closer to the Mar-a-Lago resort than the small Latana Airport, and it remains open during presidential visits. Typical security procedure requires the closure of airspace in a 10-mile radius around the resort while Trump is present, and PBI is a mere 2.5 miles from Mar-a-Lago.
