(UPDATE 4/19: The last day to buy Wyndham points with a 40% bonus is Friday April 21st, so if you’ve been thinking about it, you only have a few days left to act)

Wyndham Hotels is out with an extended offer to buy Wyndham Rewards points with a 40% bonus. Let’s examine it to see if / when it might make sense. The discount expires April 21st, so you have a few weeks to consider it.

Normally, Wyndham points cost $13.00 to purchase 1,000 points (tax included), for a purchase price of 1.30 cent per point. That might seem cheap, but remember, Wyndham points are only worth about 0.7 cents each, so at the normal rate, you’re paying a premium on the value. At the normal rate, it doesn’t make sense to buy Wyndham points in most cases.

What about with the discount offer?

If you buy 60,000 points, then with a 40% bonus offer you will get 84,000 points for $780, which brings the purchase price to 0.93 cents per point, which is closer to the normal redemption value, but still slightly higher.

While I’m generally against buying points speculatively, if you need some points for your next redemption, it could be worth topping up your account.

Using Wyndham Points to Book Vacasa Vacation Rentals

Probably the only time that it might make sense to buy Wyndham points is if you are planning on using them for an upcoming Vacasa vacation rental. You can use Wyndham Rewards points to book Vacasa vacation rentals at a rate of 15,000 points per bedroom (per night), and this is by far the best use of Wyndham points currently. I have easily been able to get 3 cents per point value out of using Wyndham points in this way

We stayed in a “1 bedroom” condo in the Smoky Mountains that slept 10 (pictured above), and we have stayed in a 2 bedroom beachfront condo in Maui right on the ocean using Wyndham Rewards points. In both cases, we got well over 3 cents per point in value. So with that kind of redemption in mind, it doesn’t seem like a bad idea to buy points for under 1 cent per point. After all, 60,000 points would get you 4 nights in a 1 bedroom Vacasa vacation rental, and you’re unlikely to get one of those for under the $585 you’d spend buying points. Remember too that you get 10% off your price if you have a Wyndham credit card, making it only cost 13,500 points per bedroom per night.

Will you buy Wyndham Rewards points with a 40% bonus offer? Or will you wait for a better offer to come back?
