Spirit is on a roll in 2017–two weeks ago they announced 10 new routes across the country, and earlier this week, they announced that in April, they would add service to Hartford, CT.

Where to?

Starting on April 27th, Spirit will add a daily year-round flight to Orlando, FL as well as a seasonal, sub-daily flight to Myrtle Beach, SC, both operated by Airbus A320 aircraft. Then, on June 15, they will add daily year-round service to Ft. Lauderdale, FL with Airbus A319 aircraft. The flight to Myrtle Beach will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

What’s the cost?

From my cursory searching, the cheapest one-way flights (without having $9 Club membership) right now cost:

  • Orlando, FL:  $65.19
  • Myrtle Beach, SC:  $55.19
  • Ft. Lauderdale, FL:  $85.19

What’s the REAL cost?

Because Spirit is never what they seem, I went and priced out a flight from Hartford to Orlando. First, I started with the Bare Fare:

$65.19 isn’t so bad, but wait, there’s more! I brought a carry-on because I’ll need clothes, and I chose an aisle seat because I didn’t want to get stuck in the middle. In the end, my $65 fare ballooned to $106–a 63% increase!

Conclusion

Having more choice is always great, and hopefully it causes Southwest and jetBlue to match fares out of Hartford. Just remember that your Spirit fare isn’t what it seems until the you’ve navigated the fee obstacle course.
