I will be the first to admit that I’m not very good about keeping tabs on my Amex offers. I’ve even failed to use a couple that I selected, knowing I needed to make a purchase from a specific merchant. When it came time to pay, I would use a different card, completely spacing that I had an offer.

You could find me later kicking myself. Money left on the table, that’s what that is.

Why you should frequently check your Amex offers

Last week I was in western Virginia for several nights, specifically working in Roanoke. For five of the nights, I stayed at the Fairfield Inn & Suites Roanoke Salem (great hotel, by the way, better than the Sheraton Roanoke). I’d planned to pay with my Chase Sapphire Reserve card to earn 3x UR points per dollar.

But then I checked my Amex offers during my last evening there. Where I’d previously only seen a couple other travel offers, including some for Choice Hotels and Hilton brands, I now saw a Marriott offer of $60 off $300. As my bill was right around $500 for five nights, this was a match made in heaven!

The offer was only showing on my Everyday Preferred card, but I’d get 500 MR points and $60 instead of 1,500 UR. The cash and MR option is definitely the better choice.

Conclusion

This was a great reminder to frequently check your Amex offers. Had I not happened to look at the offers while paying off all my cards for the month, I would not have been able to capitalize on this one. With no other paid Marriott stays on the horizon, I’m don’t think I would have ended up using it.
