With all (most?) travel deals, they come and go.  Deals that are active now will often expire, so it behooves the savvy traveler to make sure they act while the gettin’s good!  These deals don’t have quite the limited shelf life of something like a mistake fare, and they may not be for anyone, but there are (at least?) 2 deals that piqued my interest a little bit and are expiring today

Hilton Amex Surpass 80K offer

I know that Hilton gets a raw deal from most travel bloggers, but I think there is definitely some situational value there.  The Hilton Surpass American Express currently has an offer for 80,000 Hilton points upon spending $3,000 in the first 3 months (I receive no compensation if you use that link)

It does have a (non-waived) membership fee of $75, but the real key for me is that it also gives Hilton Gold status if you have the card (and Diamond membership if you spend $40,000 on the card, which I would personally not do).

Hilton Gold status is probably the best mid-tier / easily achievable status out there.  The real benefit for me is that Hilton Gold gives free breakfast, even in Europe.  We are planning a European trip for this fall, and as far as I can tell, Hilton Gold is the only status I can get that without spending a ton of money or having a ton of hotel stays that will give us free breakfast while we’re there.

As far as category bonuses go, it gives 12x at Hilton hotels, 6x points at US restaurants, supermarkets and gas stations and 3x everywhere else.

United Airlines partner business class sale

Speaking of going to Europe!

United has a current promotion where partner flights in business (and some economy flights as well) are pricing at a discounted rate.

2 things that are kind of annoying about this “promotion”.  First of all, astute readers will remember that this is the “old” rate before United gutted its award chart for redemptions on partner airlines.  So it’s like one of those stores that jacks up the price and then offers a great “sale” (i.e. the same rate it used to be!).  Note that these “sale” prices are also the same prices as redemptions on United metal itself.

Secondly is that this was pricing out this way secretly for several months before United announced this promotion.  As a computer programmer myself, it smacks me of something where they had a bug in their pricing engine and couldn’t fix it in a timely fashion, so they just decided to call it a “sale” while they worked on a fix.  So it’s certainly possible that this price will continue past today, but if you want to guarantee it, today’s the last day to lock it in.

I have not yet booked either one of these deals, but I’m pondering both of them – what about you?
