What is TSA PreCheck and how to get it for free

TPA PreCheck is an expedited screening program that allows passengers who have undergone background checks to move through expedited security lanes without taking off their shoes or removing electronics from their bags. You can find out more on TSA website. Travel & Leisure also has a good article on everything you need to know about TSA PreCheck.

TSA Precheck

You can apply for TSA PreCheck for a cost of $85 for five years. You are also eligible for TSA PreCheck if you are a member of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Trusted Traveler programs, such as Global Entry and NEXUS for Canadian citizens. TSA PreCheck is also available for U.S. Armed Forces service members, including those serving in the U.S. Coast Guard, Reserves and National Guard.

The following credit cards reimburse application fees to the TSA PreCheck program or Global Entry program:

  • All versions of American Express Platinum Cards
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve
  • Chase Ritz Carlton
  • Citi Prestige

Airport security lines and custom lines are long these days, especially during peak travel seasons. I applied for Global Entry for the entire family in early 2015 and honestly I don’t know how to travel with it anymore. Even with 3 kids, we would zip through security lines, leaving our shoes and jackets on. Coming back from oversea, whether it is Mexico or Asia, we never had to wait at customs (well except that one time when the machine wouldn’t read my fingerprints but I finally got it worked after 20 minutes.)
