Up to 25,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® miles for switching to Sprint

a close-up of a ticket

There is a current promotion by Sprint and American Airlines – offering 25,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® miles for switching cell phone service to Sprint.  You earn 20,000 AAdvantage® miles now (only for new customers), and you’ll get 5000 miles over the next 12 months (417 miles / month).

Existing customers are able to take advantage of the 5,000 miles (417 miles / month), though that will give up any discount you have through the Sprint Discount program (i.e. through your employer, school or other)

This offer is open for anyone – direct offer link.

Sprint cell network

I know that many people are very passionate about the quality of different cell networks and horror stories of poor customer service, network or both.  Personally I believe that most cell phone networks are overall very similar and certainly location dependent.  I also have heard plenty of stories, good and bad, of customer service at all of the cell phone companies.  Like I said, a lot of it is dependent on the network conditions in your particular location (or the places where you travel).

I’ve had decent experience with the Sprint International Plan as well

My experience with this promo

I actually signed up for this a few years ago and did receive my 20,000 bonus AA miles (though the Sprint store employees that helped me had no idea what I was talking about 😀 ).  I’ve been personally happy with my Sprint service,

If you are looking for a new long-term phone plan, then you can consider this promotion on its merits.  I think that it’s a decent signup promotion value, but going forward, you’ll want to evaluate the 417 AA miles you get per month versus any other discounts you might get, such as through your work / employer.  Most major employers and many groups and organizations offer cell phone discounts to all the major carriers, and those are typically in the range of ~20% off.  I would say that would most likely be better than earning 417 American miles / month.

The other option would be if you’re brave enough to play “cell phone carrier switcheroo”, that you could take advantage of the signup bonus of this promotion.  I do this with my gas and electric every few months, switching around to different carriers for better prices and signup bonuses.  I will say that switching gas and electric services around can be a hassle and perhaps more time consuming than it’s worth, and I’d imagine it would also be a hassle to do this with phone companies but…. it seems that in a situation like mine, with an unlocked phone and no current contract, that I should be able to

  • Sign up, pay the $30 activation fee, and get the 20,000 AAdvantage® miles
  • Wait for the miles to post, paying for 1-2 months of service
  • Cancel

So call it $100 all-in, though really it’s less than that since really my cost is any premium Sprint has over my current cell phone costs, which wouldn’t be a ton.  Even paying $100 for 20,000 AAdvantage® miles seems like a pretty good deal.

Has anyone taken advantage of the Sprint AAdvantage® deal?  Let me know your experiences in the comments
