Wyndham Hotels is out with an extended offer to buy Wyndham Rewards points with an (up to) 100% bonus. Let’s examine it to see if / when it might make sense. The bonus is good through December 31st, so you don’t have much time to consider it.

Normally, Wyndham points cost $13.00 to purchase 1,000 points (tax included), for a purchase price of 1.30 cent per point. That might seem cheap, but remember, Wyndham points are only worth about 0.7 cents each, so at the normal rate, you’re paying a premium on the value. At the normal rate, it doesn’t make sense to buy Wyndham points in most cases.

What about with the bonus offer? The current offer was for a 100% bonus, though your offer may be different.

If you buy 100,000 points, then with a 100% bonus offer you will get 200,000 points for $1,300, which brings the purchase price to 0.65 cents per point, which is closer to the normal redemption value, but still slightly higher.

While I’m generally against buying points speculatively, if you need some points for your next redemption, it could be worth topping up your account.

While you used to be able to use Wyndham points to book Vacasa rentals and get up to 3 cents per mile in value, that partnership has ended. For me, that takes away most of the value of Wyndham points, but you can still find some value depending on where you’re going.

Will you buy Wyndham Rewards points with a 100% bonus offer? Or will you wait for a better offer to come back?
