Discover it first quarter cashback options are now ready to activate on your cards.  This way for 5% back!

Discover it first quarter cashback 2020

Earn 5% back at Grocery Stores, Walgreens, and CVS this quarter (January, February, and March 2020), up to $1,500 maximum. Remember, this excludes purchases made at superstores that happen to also sell groceries, like Walmart and Target.  BUT Walmart Neighborhood Market might work for you.

I’m always happy to see grocery stores pop up on the rotating categories for my Discover it card.  It’s an easy category to maximize, and I’m sure it’s a big chunk of our readers’ spend too.

While I don’t like the move to specific retailers for 5%, CVS and Walgreens are good options.  (But I’ll have to be sure I don’t accidentally swing by a Rite Aid instead.)  Note that in the terms of the offer, Discover stresses that the 5% cashback bonus is only for stand-alone locations.  In theory, this means those CVS locations inside Target stores, and similar situations, won’t work.  In practice, you still may get the 5% bonus, but it likely isn’t worth trying, when you can probably find a qualifying grocery store, CVS, or Walgreens nearby.

Tips for Maximizing the Discover it First Quarter Cashback

Don’t think you’ll spend $1,500 at the grocery store by the end of March?  Here are some tips to max out your spend:

  • Buy gift cards. Walgreens, CVS, and most grocery stores have large gift card racks.  Pick up the ones you’ll use and get your 5% cashback ahead of time.  (Make sure you don’t lose the gift cards!)
  • Similarly, if you’ve got birthdays coming up, pick up any gift cards you need at these stores, rather than the merchants themselves.
  • Pick up your prescriptions at CVS or Walgreens instead of your current pharmacy. Only do this if the prices are equal to or better than what you were paying at your previous location!
