So I was reading the travel news around the Internet and came across this report from NBCNews.com.
American Air to Charge for Solo Kids up to 14
Now I will admit to being a bit naive about this in that I did not even realize that airlines CHARGED extra for unaccompanied minors. Now, upon thinking about it, it does make sense as there is some extra work that they do with an unaccompanied minor, but apparently this is widespread.
According to the article:
- American charges $150 for kids ages 5 to 14 (used to be just kids 5 to 11)
- At United it’s $150 for ages 5 to 11
- Delta charges $100 for ages 5 to 14
- Southwest charges $50 for ages 5 to 11
I’ve found the best information out there about unaccompanied minors to be Trips With Tykes excellent post on the subject.

Thanks for sharing my unaccompanied minor post and for the kind words. That post was a total beast to write and research (about 6 weeks in the making, if I remember it right), but I’m so glad to hear it has been helping a lot of people!
