If you’re still looking to book a summer European getaway, today is a good day to check for deals. Among several “off-season” fares available for trans-Atlantic flying, there are deals from New York and Chicago to Barcelona in June and July for under $500 round trip. Those are fantastic prices for school vacation, making a family trip a possibility. The best price I found from New York was $453 (United and American), while Chicago starts at $476 (American/British Air). Fares are available on select dates in late June through early August; after that rates actually drop, but these may not match your school schedule.
These are basic economy fares, so carry-on and meals are included but not seat selection. Note: American Airlines/Oneworld fares often are repricing higher by $25 – $70 on Google Flights. If you want AA flights for this deal I recommend searching for lowest prices on Google Flights but then checking for the original prices on Orbitz. I will look further into why AA deals seem to be repricing on Google Flights pretty regularly.
