Celebrate $49 Flights with Southwest’s “Obscure Holiday Sale”

Southwest Airlines returns with another fare sale, and given the theme they thankfully waited until April second, or “International Children’s Book Day” to release it. The “Obscure Holiday Sale” officially lists one-way flights from as low as $59 though, as always, cheaper flights can be found with a little searching. Always check the fare calendar even if the rate seems higher than you want to pay; fares are sometimes discounted even from the sale page prices. SWA really shines for family travel, as their “bags fly free” policy lets parents carry enough clothes and goodies for all the kids when comparing prices to other airlines “basic economy” prices. There are also good positioning flight fares here, including $49 from the Bay Area to LAX (see below).

As always with Southwest, if you’ve previously booked airfare then compare your price with the current sale prices to see if you are eligible for a refund of the price difference. Sadly, Hawaiian flights are not included with this sale. Continental U.S. travel dates are valid from 4/23/19 – 6/12/19 and 8/20/19 – 10/31/19; that’s “Impossible Astronaut Day” to “Red Rose” Day”,  and “Chocolate Pecan Pie Day” to “Magic Day” if you’re keeping track. International travel is more limited, and only valid 4/23/19 – 5/16/19 and 8/20/19 – 10/31/19. This sale requires a 21-day advance purchase, so last-second flights aren’t an option. Continental U.S. travel blacked out May 23-24, May 27, August 30, September 2, 2019. This sale lasts until 11:59 PM on April 11th in the time zone of originating city (e.g. Eastern Standard Time for flights from Albany, N.Y.) so you have a little time to plan. But don’t wait until Grilled Cheese Day (April 12th) or you’ll miss out.
