Delta’s new flash sale is for both Asia and Europe, but only for a few destinations. Each travel window is for a week, though often similar deals are available on surrounding dates.
Some of these deals are actually really solid, if they work for you. For instance, Austin to Brussels during the window is just 30K SkyMiles and $62 in fees. Compare that to a cash price of nearly $850. That means your SkyMiles are worth 2.6 cents each, a good value.
Other deals from larger airports seem stuck in the typical “SkyMiles are worth about 1.5 cents” zone for these sales. Take 18K from Boston to London, which is a fine option when cash prices are ~$440. Except fees of $176+ means you’re using 18,000 SkyMiles to save $270, so…1.5 cents/mile. Which is OK but not nearly as good as the better options.
What I find truly interesting is the fluctuating fees. For instance, here are different fees for Boston to London.
Here’s differing fees from Detroit to Zurich. The range is from $64 – $95, for economy flights on the same days in the same cabin. Delta is passing on the specific national fees for connecting airports, which can change the math for your SkyMiles redemptions.
This is a flash sale before Thanksgiving/Black Friday, so I’d expect these deals to be short-lived. Grab them now while you can.
